SignWriting List
June 6, 2004

Hello Everyone, and Adam!
Thank you for this nice message, Adam, and definitely you are a part of
the SignWriting family! What is wonderful, is that you know many of the
signers who began with SignWriting back in the 1980's, so it is coming
full-circle in 2004!

Did you receive the NTID Technical signs manual I sent you, on
mathematical signs in ASL?

As a Deaf person, who knows and teaches American Sign Language, Adam, I
hope you will help us write better ASL...grammar and individiual signs
both...and most importantly, other teachers of ASL need teaching
materials that would help them use SignWriting as a daily part of
teaching ASL, without it being a separate subject. A true writing
system for ASL is very useful in class, to show students signs on a
blackboard etc...and in vocabulary lists, and right now, most ASL
teachers do not know that SignWriting exists...so we need you for that
more than anything...

So if you are interested in adding signs to our ASL dictionary, by
typing the mathematical signs in the Tech Signs Manual, into SignWriter
DOS...or...if you are interested in writing more of the ASL definitions
for ASL signs in SignBank..or...if you can think through what ASL
teachers need, to start using SignWriting in their classrooms....your
expertise will really help in these areas, and this is where I
personally, as a hearing person, cannot help that much, other than
teaching you SignWriting itself, and helping with the final preparation
for your documents...

And this also holds true for other native signers, or Deaf people on
the List, who know ASL well...we need you for more teaching materials
and better dictionaries! So maybe you can work as a team this summer...

Maybe choose ONE goal for this summer...so that by September, when
school starts again, we have ONE new product in ASL to help teachers of
ASL...

So what do you feel would be the most valuable to hand ASL teachers in
the Fall?

Val ;-)
