I see the difference, but it's a bit on the subtle side. Having an
opaque ("white") color for the handshape would make distinction easier
to see. I don't think it'd be that hard to do -- we could start with
the original black-and white gifs, add a channel, and (beginning with
some white pixel on the periphery) "flood" with a color we later make
transparent with a simple transformation. That should handle most of
the situations. When this is done, the "core" of the handshape will be
opaque.
Next, we simply need to determine which is on top. I suppose that could
either be handled sequentially (later = more in front), or with a
separate "top" attribute. That way, details about z-layers and so on
could be left to the implementation.
