I don't really think anything I've thought of for handwriting has turned out
very effective. What this discussion has clarified for me is that there are
certain omissions that people tend to agree are sensible and clear, but that
most people wouldn't want writing pared down to the absolute minimum.

Yes, dotted lines are easy, thickening is not too hard, but doing both at
once...!

Sorry, Stefan, this wasn't intended as an arrow but as a simplified way to
write an asterisk. So yes, we're agreed that it should be a contact star,
but maybe missing such stars out when the contact is light, as Signuno
suggested, is better than trying to find cursive ways of writing the star.
