Subject: signing and sign writing

my name is emma cormack and i came across your website during studying.
i am working on a project at the glasgow school of art based on
'narratives' and would like to base it on sign langauge.
is there an alphabet for sign writing that i could become familiar
with and is sign writing based on the american form of sign language?
this is of special interest to me as my brother uses a form of sign
language.
i would greatly appreciate any imformation you could give me.
yours sincerely
emma cormack
