Hello Barbara and Everyone!
Of course glossing is inadequate...and you are not alone on that...

The truth is that glossing simply cannot describe the nuances of  
signed languages...Take a look at this written video clip in  
ASL...There not really a true word-gloss that an describe exactly  
what Kevin did...seeing the gloss-word would not tell the reader  
about his eyegaze, for example!!
