I would like to propose putting together a SignWriting Educational Symposium in DC for Summer of 2007 (July / August timeframe).
Purpose: Showcase SignWriting in Education, Literacy, and International communications.
Delegates: All current SignWriting projects, particularly those in the U.S., that are fostering the use of SignWriting in the classroom, and also encouraging delegates from all other countries (particularly South America), who are working with pilot projects.
Focus 1: SignWriting and the Deaf - Why Use Sign Writing? Deaf presenters give their point of view with copies of the current videotape library for sale.
Focus 2: Current Educational Materials: ASL, Libras (Brazilian), Norwegian, Czech versions of Sign Writing for Everyday Use, the Spanish Sigh Language materials, Nicaraguan materials.
Focus 3: Next Steps in Education: Chance to compare notes from efforts around the world.
Observations: Deaf Way II had very few opportunities to discuss any sign languages other than ASL and its impact on education. Holding this conference with ASL and users of other Sign Languages will have a high impact on the international Deaf community. Holding it near the Gallaudet Campus will encourage more Deaf and hearing users. Having delegates from all over the world will ensure that Gallaudet has copies of the educational materials in its libraries and bookstore so that people don't (as they often assume) that SignWriting died about 25 years ago and hasn't been picked up since.
Needs: Conference Committee - A Core Group to focus on obtaining space, video equipment, contracting of ASL interpreters, and communicating with delegates and interpreters of other Sign Languages. I'm willing to help Chair such an effort, but cannot do it alone, and want Deaf partners from the very beginning.
Costs: 1) Price of hotel (kept low to encourage participation), seeking specific sponsorship of a non-profit group so that we can apply for grants-in-aid to launch this effort.
Do I have anyone currently on this list willing to help this happen?

Hello from Slovenia,
I support the idea to have SW topic at this EFSLI conference. As a
sign language interpreter in would be very interesting and educational.
All the best
