I agree 1000%!
And I want to know more about that teaching method... does it have a name, can you point me to the research behind it? ::smile:: Thats one of the biggest complaints about/from signing students-- receptive skills lag so far behind expressive, even after years and years of study sometimes.
Can I forward the relevant part to the teachASL list? We have just been discussing teaching philosophy-- voice or no voice in class...

Well, this is my perception. I think the way that SW can be more readily accepted in the American Deaf Community is to show how it truly represents ASL. If the bulk of documents show 'weak ASL' then the American Deaf Community will not see how it can be used to promote and preserve ASL. Those who value literacy understand the value of sharing ideas. But, at this point, preservation of ASL and the promotion of ASL as a valid and necessary language for American Deaf is a higher value for them. So, I understand your point about the transcription of the video and how the actual signing does not impact SW at all. But from a PR point of view within the ASL Deaf community, I think it is better to make sure we have a higher percentage of documents that show clear ASL.
I assume the same would be true of most other Deaf communities around the world. If the document is a clear representation of the language in use, then it will make the SW more attractive.
For ASL curriculum, I like Signing Naturally. I have also become excited about a new way to teach sign language where the student actually does not do any signing at first but just watches signing around him/her and responds to instructions ("Go get the paper", "Bring the book to me.", etc.) for a period of about 2-3 weeks (assuming a class that meets daily). After that, the students begin to respond in sign language. I observed this method with one sign language class and students were signing much more naturally than students who started signing from day one. The reason for this approach is that observing the language for this initial period causes the brain to begin to organize itself to learn that language which will help it become more natural in the long term.
Just my 2¢,
Stuart

Hi Valerie and friends,
I just downloaded the 6 days trial version of this ASL course.
Of course - with almost no insight to really DEAF ASL SIGNING - I cannot judge whatsoever the "quality" of the performance -
Well on the other hand - a scribe writing SignLanguage performance in SignWriting does not judge the performance but tries to document what he sees.
And for this reason it would be a wonderful chance for all of us and for newcomers if there would be a couple of online videos on some websites - showing single signs as well as phrases - just as this is needed for language courses.
From my point of view we are still in need to compare the movements that are videotaped with the signwriting-spelling options.
If the performance of a given signer is jugded to be "weak ASL" well that will do no harm to the task to document this performance in SignWriting.
Following the last postings I understand better that some DEAF signers feel somehow shy or frightened if it comes to the point that the spectator puts more interest in style of signing instead of discussing the ideas he tries to express in his language. SW allows to document this performance on a scale from scientific exact to kind of every day style ...
If we are interested to spread the use of SW it would be great to collect as many of different SW documents from various sources ...
So if Jake does not mind it would be great to match some videos to SL videos.
Just my mind.

Ha! Maybe instead of using an English script, if the script had been
written in ASL with SignWriting directly, the discussion would have
become more ASL! Good reason to use SignWriting ;-)
And you are right about signing from an English script ...that is
bound to have some influence I would think...and maybe he realized he
was signing to hearing people who do not know that much...that
changes a person's language sometimes too...
And we can't judge the course itself without seeing it... Thanks for
your input everyone -
Val ;-)
