Question regarding face direction symbols

Hi, Valerie! I am doing some work on my MA research and was looking
at the face direction symbols. I noticed that there are essentially 3
versions of face direction symbols.
1)

seem to be the most common directions and so this seems to be a
shortcut version?

where the symbol above the head represents the angle and position
of the nose? I assume this is used when you don't wish to use a stick
figure but need to express the face direction and it doesn't fit the
two general cases listed above?
3) There seems to be an additional version of this with just the symbol

which I assume is used when/if you want to do it as more of a stick
figure approach? For these symbols, I assume the head symbol is
placed on top of the neck line?
Am I on the right track of understanding the intent of these symbols?
Also, I noticed that in the IMWA, the version of symbols like this:

are actually listed twice. Could I ask why that is?
