Hello Stuart and everyone -
I will answer your question in pieces ;-)

Yes, the statement above is correct. Those are called Face Direction  
Lines. They were the FIRST symbols to be developed historically. They  
show static positions of the head, not movement.

The Face Direction Lines show the direction of the nose, and are  
useful when you do not want to write a full Facial Circle...They are  
easy to write by hand. A quick slash across the Shoulder Line (see  
attached) shows the direction of the nose.

As you know, the Movement Writing system started with a stick figure,  
and other sections of the system, such as DanceWriting and  
SportsWriting continue to use the stick figure to this day. These  
symbols are from the Full-Body section of Movement Writing:
