AW: [sw-l] spelling question 30 - squeeze" motion

Val, Stefan and all,

thank you for your responses. I think I was a bit confused about the need to keep numbers small in print. When I thing about it, the words 'tretti' etc. are not particularlily small - but then we tend to use the arabic numerals for writing numbers for paging etc. Sometime in the future these symbols may be available along with the SW symbols, as they were in the old DOS program. For now, I will go for the two handshapes writing in a text, and for number-by-number for marking pages etc (the signs 3 and 7 rather than the sign 37). How does that sound to you?

Ingvild

Hi Stefan!

I agree!!

No dots are the best for single squeezes. The dots were not designed for single squeezes...only for doubles and triples.

So writing the beginning and ending handshapes with no dots is definitely the easiest and the best choice.

  Hi Valerie, Ingvild and sw-list

well from my point of view I would prefer the "easy-to-read-version" especially if you think of children, students and hearing SL-learners.

There are no "hidden" ideas behind this obvious description. An excellent support to remember the performance for this sign.

Here are three possible writings that I might use.

In the first example, the dot is not necessary but just added
information. The second and third examples remove the first position.
The bending of the fingers holds the meaning in the sign...the bent
fingers show the "result of the squeeze" motion...so we write that
plus the arrow pulls or pushes the hand to the side...

It has taken us at least 20 years in ASL to find the best way to write
some numbers...and some of our writings are very abbreviated, and not
so easy to read for those who do not know ASL, so I understand that
you need to find a short way to write numbers, especially for tiny
page numbers etc...so for tiny page numbers I would think the third
one in this example would be the best...

Hope this has been helpful. Happy to be in discussions again!

  Val ;-)
