Kate -
The avatar is not signing the movement in the sign that you attached...
It is signing this:

The finger is touching the face near the right eye...the palm is facing outward. From the signer's point of view, the signer sees the back of the hand...so the square for the fist is completely dark...and the movement is not a short up-diagonal, but a longer one...that is how the avatar signed the sign...here is the way it is written in SignWriting, if I were basing the writing on your avatar's movements...

If you really want the avatar to move like your original sign, which is not written well in SignWriting anyway, then the fist would have been contacting at cheek level, and the movement would have been a very very short up-diagonal
Your original sign:

So maybe you need to choose signs from an edited dictionary in ASL, rather than the signs in the public ASL SignPuddle which are not edited? there are a lot of new writers putting in signs in the public ASL SignPuddle and they do not necessarily know how to write exactly as you need, and you can't tell who wrote some signs, because when we moved a whole bunch of signs from SignPuddle 1.0 to 1.5 all at once long ago, a lot of the old signs got my name on them and one date, and they were not necessarily written by me (smile ;-)...not that that really matters...my point is that you need a database where the signs are correctly written so you can base your avatar on them...if you want I can arrange for you to use another database that is for testing purposes that might be better for your project...I don't even know what that sign means...but it certainly is not HELLO...it must be some version of KNOW...
Val ;-)
