A primeira história escrita em SignWriting publicada foi: "Goldilocks and the three bears".

SignWriting (written sign, signed or written) is a writing system of sign languages (in Brazil, sign languages). SignWriting expressed as the movements of the hands, the marks non-manual and points of articulation. Was developed in 1974 by Valerie Sutton, a dancer, who had two years earlier, developed DanceWriting. She was then in Denmark registered the first page of a long history: the creation of a writing system for sign languages. As the entries made by Valerie Sutton SignWriting on the homepage, in 1974, the University of Copenhagen asked Sutton to record an gestures were videotaped. The first forms were inspired by the writing system dances.

Although not the first writing system for sign languages, the SignWriting was the first that could adequately represent the facial expressions and nuances of posture gesturing, or include information such as, for example, if the sentence is long or short. It is the only system that is used on a regular basis, for example, to publish information university in ASL (American Sign Language).

In 1977, Dr. Judy Shepard-Kegl organized the first workshop on SignWriting Society of Linguistics New England in the United States. That same year, the first group of deaf adults to learn the system was a group of the National Theatre of the Deaf in Connecticut. The first story was published written in SignWriting: "Goldilocks and the three bears." In 1978, the first video lectures have been edited. In 1979, Valerie Sutton worked with a team from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, assisting in the preparation of a series of pamphlets called The Techinical Signs Manual, which used illustrations in SignWriting.

In the 1980s, Sutton presented a paper at the National Symposium on Research and Teaching Sign Language, entitled A "Form of analyzing the ASL and other sign language without going through spokene language translation." Thereafter, SignWriting began to develop more and more. As a handwritten system, the system can now be written in the computer.

Through the computer, SignWriting began to become much more popular in the United States. The system has evolved over the years, no longer with the way it was created in 1974.
Previously, users of sign language were not writing in their own language. This means you use to write the written Portuguese, their second language. Encounter many difficulties in this language of expression. The written production of deaf people is almost nonexistent, limited to basic communications made with difficulty. In reading, as a rule, even after many years of education, understanding is limited. With SignWriting, the possibility exists for the Deaf write in your own language, without having to use an oral language. Below is a map that shows the use of SignWriting by several countries, including Brazil. The Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary Trilingual - deit, Pounds, author Cesar Fernando Capovilla, Raphael Duarte Walkiria and Aline Cristina L. Mauritius is an important publication on the subject in Brazil.
