SignWriting List
April 11, 2016

So does this mean, Bill, that we could have had transcripts done simultaneously while we were presenting in 2014 and 2015 and we did not realize it? It sounds like you must have told me and I did not realize it - thank you for informing us both then and now.

I will definitely look into this -

Val ;-)

I just looked at Hangouts and it seems to have changed. However, when starting a video call, I'm given an option on the menu to use the original hangouts and that provides for using apps. There's a CC button in mine that allows me to connect to streamtext.net .

CART stands for Communication Access Real-time Translation. Basically, a CART provider listens in to the sermon at his/her home (or wherever) - usually through a cell phone used by the person talking - and codes it in shorthand with a stenotype machine. Special software in a computer (usually a laptop) translates the shorthand from the stenotype into words. These words are then broadcast live over the internet on a site such as <http://www.streamtext.net/>www.streamtext.net <http://www.streamtext.net/>. It's a very quick, reliable, established method and it can be accessed either on a computer or smart phone.

Because of her knowledge and background, she provides remote CART for her radio show. Her deaf friends (some who live a thousand miles away) "listen" in. It's an amazing experience: the deaf listening to a radio show .. who would have thought?
