When I sign COFFEE, I too, circle counter clockwise, but I can read the writing because I know the sign.  For the original poster, who mentioned that some signs changing the direction of the rub changes the meaning, could you use movement arrows to specify?

 'Morning!
As a LIBRAS signer, I tend to do the rubbing in a counter-clockwise direction.
As Ms. Anna Grace, I never thought much of the symbols direction, but, after reading Mr. Honza's e-mail I'm quite curious about this "component".
Mr. Honza, wouldn't the arrows solve the problem?

Hi All,

Now that I think about the rubbing component, as a right-hander in American Sign Language (ASL), I find myself rubbing a counter-clockwise direction in the signs for COFFEE, WASHING-A-DISH, SORRY, PLEASE, NAUSEA.
I was never conscious of the direction in rubbing until now. I would be interested in finding out which direction others are doing in ASL.
As a teacher of ASL, I think the direction of rubbing is important. (eg, how does signing PLEASE in the other direction strike you?)

Hello SignWriting List, and Honza from the Czech Republic,
Are you getting messages from the SignWriting List now, Honza, using your new Gmail account?
I hope you get this email.  I want to be sure that you get it, so please tell us if you did.
Regarding the Rub Symbol…Direction of rubbing was never written with the symbol. The symbol always goes one direction and represents rubbing in general without stating the direction of rubbing.
But it's a very interesting idea, but never a part of the International SignWriting Alphabet 2010 (ISWA).

Hi Valerie,

since I haven't received any emails from the list for last two years, I am trying now to find out my questions I have posted and haven`t got any response.
First of all I am wondering about rub symbol. I thought there used to be two two rub symbols in the SignPuddle (clockwise and anticlockwise rolled), but now I see only one there. .
In czech sign language the rub direction matters, so I teach my students to be careful about way of rolling.
Is there a way how to write down direction of rubbing?
Now I am not sure, since there is only one rub symbol (maybe I only imagined there was two)

Thank you
Honza
