SignWriting List
May 27, 2025

Hello SW List and Olavo!

Below I have pasted the Google English translation of what Olavo said in his last message.

And my answer…

No one person, no matter how idealistic and well-meaning, with all kinds of time on their hands, can “manually" archive a List as busy as the International SW Community Group, which includes TWO Lists - one for the general public and one for the software developers - The SignWriting List has been archived since 1997 and we have THREE Archives - ALL the Archives were done through software programs provided as gifts to us by a University or a programmer who arranged it for us - We have three Archives because we moved the List to different places - all based on who could provide us the Archives.

You can access and search the three archives here:

SignWriting List Archives
https://www.signwriting.org/forums/swlist/

So I cannot do it personally, and even if you offered, Olavo, I know sooner or later it would become overwhelming for you

So I suggest that we plan on adding a FOURTH ARCHIVE on this Archives page:

SignWriting List Archives
https://www.signwriting.org/forums/swlist/

The fourth archive will be for the International WhatsApp Group, BUT, someone, a programmer, or a University needs to create a software program to do the automatic archiving for the International SW Community. It must be a computer program -

I predict we will find the angel needed to make this happen - but we have to ask around...

So can you announce this, Olavo on the two WhatsApp groups? Ask: Who can program an Archive of our messages here on WhatsApp? That is automatic and does not depend on Manual work once programmed?

It will be fun -

And thank you for your time and efforts - I bet we will find a solution

Val ;-)

"Excellent Valerie!

You are right. Unfortunately, WhatsApp does not have a feature to natively archive conversations so that people who come along later can access them.

However, one way to archive some important information that is sent to the WhatsApp Community is to manually copy and paste it into a Google Docs file, for example, and make the link available to anyone who wants to access it.

Or, if you prefer, manually copy and paste some of this important information into a page on the SignWriting.org website so that anyone on the web can access it by searching for certain words. Maybe this page could be called "WhatsApp Community Highlights of the Week" or something like that.

This could be a temporary solution until we find something better.

What do you think?"

> It is hard, though, to be on both Lists at the same time, but we will be keeping the SignWriting List going anyway, because the SignWriting List is Listserve software and it has an Archive, where we save and record each message posted to the SW List. The Archives are very valuable and I do not want to lose the Archives, because researchers and students can search the Archives on the internet for information for the future and WhatsApp does not provide an Archive feature.

At the moment The SignWriting List, which is on Listserve software, has around 200 members from around 18 countries. I believe in time the WhatsApp group will be the biggest, but at the moment they are about equal.
