Chers amis,
 
Comme vous le savez, Boyd et moi travaillons au Népal depuis 40 ans, et la terrible catastrophe qui frappe ce merveilleux pays ne peut pas nous laisser indifférents. Plusieurs personnes qui nous connaissent ou connaissent le Népal de près ou de loin nous ont demandé comment aider. Les Népalais sont incroyablement courageux et ils n'attendent pas les bras croisés qu'on vienne à leur secours. Cependant ils ont terriblement besoin de notre aide pour reconstruire leur pays.
Certains de nos amis hésitent à offrir leurs dons aux grandes organisations qui ont des coûts administratifs importants. Elles sont nécessaires pour certaines interventions majeures, les plus petites ont d'autres avantages. Les chercheurs que nous sommes  ne sont pas bien armés pour collecter des fonds nous-mêmes. Avec d'autres collègues, nous avons donc tenté de proposer une brève liste d'organisations, petites et grandes, que l'un ou l'autre d'entre nous a eu l'occasion d'apprécier dans leurs actions au Népal, avant le séisme. Bien sûr nous ne connaissons qu'une fraction infime des excellentes organisations qui oeuvrent au Népal et méritent votre soutien.
Quoi qu'il en soit, voici une brève liste de possibilités. Toutes les organisations listées étaient déjà actives au Népal avant le séisme et sont donc en mesure de travailler efficacement et sans délai en collaboration avec les populations et les autorités locales. Certaines sont liées à la France, d'autres non.
Vous pouvez bien sûr faire circuler ces suggestions à tous vos amis, aux organisations dont vous faites partie. Pensez, s'il vous plait, à renouveler votre soutien dans 3 mois, dans 6 mois et au-delà, quand les médias auront tout oublié, alors que la mousson qui va commencer va emporter d’autres villages dans des glissements de terrain, contre-coups des tremblements de terre.

Dear Friends,
As you know we have been working in Nepal for forty years and the terrible tragedy that has hit this wonderful and unfortunate country cannot leave us indifferent. Many people who know us, or know Nepal, or know of Nepal, would like to help. We have been asked what to do, where to give.
The Nepalese are very brave and resilient and have not waited for anyone to start helping themselves, as you may have seen in the media and on facebook, youtube, etc. But they badly need our help to rebuild their country.
Some people are wary of giving to large organisations with big overhead costs. We, as researchers, are not equipped to handle gifts. So we have tried with other colleagues who know Nepal well to compile a list of organizations, big and small, which one or the other of us trusts. We of course know only a few of the very large number of excellent organizations which are doing incredible work on the spot and are worthy of support.
Anyhow here is a short list of possibilities. All the organizations listed, big or small, were already active in Nepal before the earthquake, and are therefore able to act efficiently and in coordination with the local people and authorities. Some of these organizations are linked to France, since that is where we are and we happen to know them, but most are not.
 
Feel free to distribute to all your friends, to the clubs and organizations you belong to.
 
Please think of renewing your support in three months, in six months, and even beyond. With the coming monsoon landslides are expected to continue. The media have already forgotten.
