Cet ouvrage est la première présentation bilingue (français-anglais)
des langues ouraliennes qui, avec une trentaine de langues
répertoriées et plusieurs centaines de dialectes, constituent le
territoire linguistique le plus étendu de l'Eurasie septentrionale.
Le livre rassemble et actualise les données éparses sur cette grande
famille méconnue de langues non indo-européennes, et dresse par
ailleurs un bilan de l'apport potentiel des langues ouraliennes aux
Sciences du langage et aux Sciences cognitives. Plus de 40 auteurs
parmi les spécialistes mondiaux du domaine ont été réunis à cet
effet, originaires d'Europe (Allemagne, Autriche, Estonie, Finlande,
France, Hongrie, Italie, Russie, Suède) et d'Amérique du Nord.
Plusieurs des neuf chapitres sont consacrés à des sujets classiques :
la typologie ouralienne, les problèmes spécifiques des trois grandes
langues finno-ougriennes d'État (estonien, finnois, hongrois) ou
l'ancrage des langues ouraliennes dans leur environnement arctique -
avec un détour par les langues eskaléoutes et paléo-sibériennes. Les
chapitres les plus novateurs pour la théorie linguistique traitent
des débats actuels sur l'origine controversée des langues ouraliennes
- en particulier la place des langues samoyèdes (et la Préface de
Claude Hagège rappelle l'hypothèse eurasiatique) ; du plurilinguisme
ouralien (langues en contact et diaspora) ; des processus de
Structuration Informationnelle de ces langues comparées à d'autres
langues du monde. Trois index détaillés (auteurs, langues, matières)
et un résumé bilingue de chaque contribution facilitent
l'accès à ce volumineux ouvrage.
This book is the first French-English bilingual presentation of the
Uralic language family, which, with approximately thirty languages
and several hundreds of dialects, constitutes the most extensive
linguistic territory of Northern Eurasia. The book offers an updated
review of information available about these little known
non-Indo-European languages as well as an inventory of their
potential contributions to the linguistic and cognitive sciences. An
international team of over 40 contributors has been gathered among
the most prominent specialists of the domain, from European countries
(Austria, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia,
Sweden) and North America.
Several of the nine chapters are devoted to classic subjects: Uralic
typology, specific problems of the three Finno-Ugric official
languages of Western Europe (Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian), or the
anchoring of Uralic languages to their Arctic environment - with an
excursus into Eskimo-Aleut and Paleo-Siberian languages. The most
innovative chapters for modern theories deal with the controversial
origin of the Uralic languages - in particular the status of
Samoyedic within the family (and Claude Hagège's foreword reminds us
of the Eurasiatic hypothesis); with Uralic multilingualism (languages
in contact, and diaspora situations); and with the Information
Structuring processes of these languages, compared with other
languages of the world. Three detailed indexes (authors, languages,
subjects) and a bilingual abstract for each article make the material
of this substantial volume accessible.
