[Ura-list] CIFU XIII – new developments

Dear URA-LIST Community,

here some news concerning the plans for the 13th Congressus Internationalis Fenno-Ugristarum (apologies for cross-postings).

As it seems that the CoVID-19 epidemic is still spreading (even if there are some indications that in Austria, the strict lockdown measures are starting to have an effect) and we cannot predict the situation in August, in the discussions with the international organizing committee the consensus is emerging that we will have to postpone the congress. (Many other similar events have been cancelled or postponed lately, for instance, the Societas Linguistica Europaea conference scheduled for late August in Bucharest.) Currently, we are discussing new dates in August 2021 (one or two weeks before the World Congress of Hungarian Studies which is scheduled to take place in Warsaw from August 23 on); more information will appear on our website by April 19.

If, as it now seems probable, the congress is postponed, in principle the whole programme – general sessions, symposia, plenaries – will be transferred to the new date. Otherwise, we would be working according to the original plans; no reregistration or resubmission of abstracts is necessary.

However, we are now also planning an Internet-based pre-conference for the originally planned dates in August 2020, as a step towards the future of international scholarly communication and as an additional opportunity for those who do not want to wait another year for the publication of their research results. If there is enough interest and if we can find a satisfactory technical solution (ideas and experiences are welcome!), we will offer this option to all interested participants. In that case, there will be a complementary call for papers in the autumn of this year, so that also those who participated in the online conference (as well as those who missed the first call, or those whose abstract was rejected) can submit another abstract for the real-life conference of 2021.
