Dear all,
We will organise the closing symposium of the multidisciplinary KINURA project (Evolution of kinship in Uralic speaking populations / Sukulaisuussuhteiden evoluutio ja kontaktit uralilaisissa puhujapopulaatioissa https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/organisations/kinura/, funded by Kone Foundation) on the 7th of October 2026 at the University of Helsinki and on Zoom.
The plenary speaker is Professor of Anthropology, Fiona M. Jordan (University of Bristol, UK) who was the PI in the ERC-funded project VARIKIN: Cultural Evolution of Kinship Diversity (2015-2021). We will also present the new "Kin terms and their origins in Uralic languages" database and research done in KINURA.
In addition, we invite abstracts for 15-20 minute presentations on the themes of kinship, family and contacts from different fields, such as linguistics, genetics and archaeology. Our focus is on the Uralic languages and the area in which they are and have been spoken, but other close-by areas may also be covered. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, contact influences in social terminology in certain Uralic languages, contact influences in archaeological material from the focus area and what genetics can tell us about the social structures of a population.
Please send the abstracts (max. 300 words) to terhi.honkola at helsinki.fi by the 23rd of August 2026. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by the 6th of September. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
With best wishes, on behalf of the KINURA project,
Terhi Honkola
