Today we have received sad news from Udmurtia. The page of the Udmurt
State University and the Udmurt news in the social network Vkontakte
have informed, that on May 8th Doctor of Philology, Honored Worker of
Public Education of the Udmurt Republic, Labor Veteran of Udmurt State
University, Professor of Udmurt State University Alexandr Fedorovich
Shutov passed away.
A.F. Shutov is known in Finno-Ugric studies and Udmurt linguistics as
one of the leading experts on the syntax of the Udmurt language.
Born on May 18, 1947, in the village of Bol'shiye Siby, Mozhginsky
District, he graduated from Mozhginsky Pedagogical College. From 1970
to 1975, he studied in the Udmurt Language and Literature Department
at Udmurt State University. After completing his university studies,
he completed his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Linguistics
of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where, under the supervision of the
world-renowned academician B. A. Serebrennikov, he wrote and
successfully defended his PhD dissertation, "Absolute Phrases in the
Udmurt Language," in 1980.
Since 1979 Shutov worked at the Udmurt State University and dedicated
his life to training Udmurt specialists and developing Udmurt
linguistics. He has written and published over 100 works, all of which
examine issues of Udmurt syntax. This area of Udmurt linguistics
remains one of the least developed.
This area of linguistics was also the subject of his doctoral
dissertation, "Hypotaxis in the Udmurt Language," published in 1999.
Shutov was a regular participant in all-Union, all-Russian, regional,
and republican academic conferences, symposia, and international
congresses of Finno-Ugric studies. At the university, Shutov conducted
extensive educational and community work among students, lectured,
served as department head, academic secretary, and a member of the
dissertation council for candidate and doctoral dissertations in
philology.
He is a Veteran of Labor of Udmurt University and has been awarded the
honorary title of "Honored Worker of Public Education of the Udmurt
Republic."
Graduates of the Udmurt Philology Faculty remember their teacher with
kind words, noting his democratic approach, tact, and kindness in
organizing the educational process.
In addition to courses on Udmurt syntax, Shutov also gave theoretical
courses on the Finnish language to students before the actual Finnish
language curriculum was launched in the 90s.
Personally, I remember him from 1997. He was a friendly person who got
along with everyone. Udmurt linguistics has once again lost one of its
pillars.
