The American Legion was founded by WWI vets, and was quite right, especially in the south. The VFW was spun off in the 30's by disgusted (and more moderate) Legionaires after the Legion tried to stage a coup to replace Roosevelt with retired Marine Corps general Smedley Butler. Ray Ott
