Subject:Transcription

The transliteration preferred in the US is the one used by IJMES (International Journal of Middle East Studies).  This is printed on the last page of each issue of IJMES.

In Europe, especially continental Europe, the preferred system seems to be that used in the Encyclopedia of Islam.
