A useful reference on the language of travellers in Britain is Ian Hancock's
article in "Language in thr British Isles", edited by Peter Trudgill, Cambridge
University Press 1994. This covers both Shelta and Polari, the former having
both a Gaelic and English version.

Less easy to get hold of is Macalister's "The Secret Languages of Ireland",
1937, also CUP.

Hancock has a good bibliography among which he lists an article by Clement
on "The secret languages of the Scottish travelling people" in
Grazer Linguistische Studien: Sprachlich Sonderformen xv.
