Balf, Mary.  1978.  Why that name?: Place names of Kamloops district.  
Kamloops: Kamloops Museum.  

Page 30: "Malakwa - the Chinook word for mosquito, presumably derived from 
the French 'bad' and the Shuswap 'kwa'--an indication of the stagnant water 
where mosquitoes bred."

With due respect for Ms. Balf's considerable work on Kamloops history, I 
think it's been established that /malakwa/ can be traced back to Canadian 
French <maringouin> "mosquito."
