Parsing is traditionally syntactic, but I don't think we need limit ourselves to that - the medium certainly doesn't impose it. If anything I might be so bold as to observe that text is one of the few media which carry relatively robust semantic interpretations (pragmatics notwithstanding).

I expect you might equally well struggle to decide which melodies are syntactically well-formed.
