I would suggest taking a look at Larry Gross' -CONTESTED CLOSETS: THE
POLITICS AND ETHICS OF OUTING-  (uni. of Minn. p, 1993). The books takes a
look into public aspects of outings but includes gossip as well. You may
also want to examine other aspects of gossip, for example the functions
it fulfills--from personal position (e.g., Robert Paine) to group boundary
setting (e.g., Gluckman).
