New CAL Project
English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS)

CAL is pleased to announce the initiation of the pilot year of its EHLS
program. EHLS will enable adults who are native speakers of critical
languages to acquire the English language proficiency they need to
function effectively in government and business positions in the United
States. In this pilot year, the program will recruit native speakers
of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian to participate. Iinstruction will take
place at the University of Washington in Seattle and at Georgetown
University in Washington, DC.

Funding for the EHLS program comes from the National Security Education
Program in the U.S. Department of Defense. Competitive scholarships will
be available to individuals who meet the language qualifications, are
U.S. citizens, and are willing to commit to work for 1 year within the
federal government.

For more information about the project, visit www.cal.org/ehls or contact
Deborah Kennedy, EHLS program manager, at ehls at cal.org.
