" The critical language situation arose as a result of the playing down of
the roles of the indigenous languages in society and politics. The sphere of
use was getting constantly narrower. The almost total exclusion of
indigenous languages from the Northern school-system led a loss of prestige
of the mother tongue and to a sharp reduction of its social function. At
school, children were even prohibited from speaking in their mother tongue."
