That is unfortunately a completely outdated view. Consider the latest 
entry in the Brockhaus (equivalent to the Encyclopaedia Britannica in

The entry about the ethnogeneses of the Germanic people is very 
interesting. I provide the German text and the translation in between:


Die Ethnogenese der Germanen

Die neuere Forschung lehnt das Modell einer germanischen Urheimat 
zwischen Südskandinavien und dem Mittelelbegebiet, die seit der 
Bronzezeit nachzuweisen sei und von der aus südliche und westliche 
Landstriche germanisiert worden seien, ab. 


Trans: Latest research rejects the model of a Germanic origin between 
southern Scandinavia and the middle Elbe, which was held to go back to 
the bronze age and from where southern and western areas were 
'germanised'.



Viel eher bildeten sich aus einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher 
eisenzeitlicher Kulturen (mit bronzezeitlichen Wurzeln) zwischen 
Norddeutschland und den Mittelgebirgen (im Osten bis zur Weichsel) 
ganz allmählich die germanischen Stämme aus. Dieser vielschichtige 
Prozess ist noch nicht gänzlich erforscht. 


trans: Instead the different iron age cultures (with bronze age roots) 
between North Germany and the middle range mountains (in the east up 
to the Vistula) developed gradully into Germanic tribes. The 
complicated process is not yet fully researched.





Die höher entwickelte, nah verwandte keltische Zivilisation im Süden 
(von Gallien über Süddeutschland und Böhmen bis hin nach Südpolen) 
uebte einen beträchtlichen Einfluss auf diese Entwicklung aus. Die 
keltische Kultur wurde in großem Maßstab übernommen (Siedlungswesen, 
Münzen, Schmuckformen) genau wie die überlegene keltische Technologie 
(Drehbank, Töpferscheibe). 


Trans: The higher developed, closely related Celtic civilisation in 
the South (from Gaul over South Germany, Bohemia and southern Poland) 
exerted considerable influence on the development of the Germanic 
people. Celtic culture was adopted to a large extent (settlement 
forms, coinage, jewellery) as well as the superior Celtic technology.




 Das verbindende Element zwischen den verschiedenen ethnischen Gruppen 
bei der Ethnogenese der Germanen war die Zugehörigkeit zur Randzone 
der keltischen La-Tene-Kultur. Die Gruppen glichen sich unter starkem 
keltischen Einfluss einander an, ohne jedoch selbst Kelten zu 
werden.
 
Trans: The unifying element between the different ethnic groups in the 
ethnogenisis of the Germanic people was that they all belonged to 
the Celtic La-Tene cultural periphery. The groups converged under 
strong Celtic influence, without becomming Celts themselves.





Zwei kulturelle Gruppen verdienen besondere Beachtung.  Die 
Jastorfkultur entwickelte sich kontinuierlich seit dem 6. Jahrhundert 
 v. Chr. aus spätbronzezeitlichen Wurzeln heraus auf der jütländischen 
 Halbinsel, in  Mecklenburg, Brandenburg und in Nordböhmen. 
Trans: Two cultural group a worth mentioning. The Jastorf culture 
developed continuously from the 6. century BC from late bronze age 
roots on the Jutland Peninsula, in Mecklenburg, Brandenburg and in 
northern Bohemia.



Die Przeworskkultur entstand im Gebiet zwischen Oder und Warthe und 
zeichnete sich durch die Übernahme keltischer Waffen und der Sitte, 
Waffen mit ins Grab von Kriegern zu geben, aus.  

Trans: The Przeworsk culture developed in the area between Oder and 
Warthe and is characterised by the adoption of Celtic weapons and the  
custom to place weapons into the graves of warriors.



Die Sitte des Waffenbeigebens breitete sich bald in das 
Elbe-Saale-Gebiet aus, höchstwahrscheinlich als Rezeption des 
keltischen Gefolgschaftswesens. 

Trans: The custom to place weapons into graves quickly spread to the 
Elbe-Saale region, most likely as a sign that the Celtic 
'Gefolgschaftswesen' (relationship between lords and his warriors) was 
adopted.



So haben die Kelten nicht nur ihre materielle Kultur, sondern auch  
Gesellschaftsstrukturen weitergegeben und damit zur Ethnogenese der 
Germanen beigetragen. 

Trans: Thus, the Celts have contributed tot he Germanic ethnogeneses 
not only through their material culture, but also with their social 
structure.

This German exhibition obviously did not include finds like the Mengen 
 hoard of Ostrogothic coins, the Ostrogothic fibulae from Lauchheim, 
etc. or any reference to the so called Gothic grave under the Augsburg 
 Cathedral, etc.

Today's Germany has nothing to do with the Goths. Political boundaries 
of modern states are entirely irrelevant for the study of ancient 
people.
