Dear Andreas,

further about literature references about the arrival of Germanic
settlers on the Crimean peninsula, I found the following site, which
gives a short note by Aleksandr Aibabin abou the Alans:

http://jam.iif.szabinet.hu/rendez/barbar/resume/Aibabin.html

Aibabin writes:

"At the very beginning of the 5th century on the slopes of the second
ridge which had been inhabited by the Alans and Germans since the
second half of the 3d century (in Skalistoe, at the foot of
Baklaand Mangup, and that of the first ridge ( in Luchistoe new
necropolises with T-shaped vaults and shaft-and-chamber graves
were springing up."

This also seems to indicate that Aibabin is of the opinion that
Germanic/Gothic settlers had arrived on the (southern) Crimean as
early as the mid 3rd century (or more precisely the second half of hte
3rd century).

One of A. Aibabin's main works on the topic is called "Etnicheskaya
istoria rannevezantiskogo krima", 1999, (i.e. The Ehnic history of
early Byzantine Crimea). I have not yet had a chance to look at it,
but the British Library does have it so I will be able to consult the
book soon.

cheers,

Dirk
