Dear Bertil,
your information is not quite correct. Athanaric was not a king, he 
was a "iudex" and Theodosius I did not conclude a treaty with him, 
he received him with great pomp and honour as a fugitive from his 
own people in Constantinople on Januar 11th, 381 AD. Athanaric 
died a fortnight later in the city. The decisive treaty for the 
settlement in Macedonia and Thrace (probably with Fritigern, 
although the latter is not named) was concluded a year and a half 
later on October 3rd, 382 AD in the form of a deditio of the 
"universa gens Gothorum cum rege suo".
