Dirk,

I have no opinion about the dating of the Sparlösa runestone.
Remenber this is a runstone.

What I am talking about are the Gotlandics picturestones that go back
to the 2nd century.
I just spoke to professor Erik Nylén who is the author to the book
"Gotlandic picture stones" where we have the oldest pictures of
sailing ships in the Baltic.
He says that the oldest dating of a picture stone with sails in
Gotland is about 600 or somewhat earlier.
That shows that the Gutnish people used sails at least in the 6th century.

As we have no earlier pictures of sailing ships in the Baltic does
not mean that they did not use sails earlier. What is so particular
about sails?
It has been used in the Mediterranean much earlier.

The Gotlandic people were the dominating people in the Baltic until
the 6th century when suddenly there appeared a powerful force in the
Lake Mälar area. We can testify from archaeological finds that there
were wars between those two.
You can read about them in Beowulf. A large part deals with those wars.
Your can read about it in the Guta sagah (the Gotlandic history
written down about 1220)
