Conference announcement: Cultures & Languages Across the Curriculum -- November 2005; REGISTRATION DEADLINE 14 OCTOBER

The University of Iowa, in collaboration with Binghamton 
University and the American Council on Education, will host 
a conference on Cultures and Languages Across the 
Curriculum, November 5 - 6, 2005, at the University of Iowa 
in Iowa City.  The conference will examine opportunities to 
expand the role of culture in LAC initiatives and will 
consider alternative models that foster the acquisition of 
cross-cultural competencies.  This conference will also 
consider other LAC issues that have not yet been adequately 
discussed or analyzed, including:  1) How does LAC relate to 
comparative literature, cultural studies, and area studies? 
2) How does LAC fit into the international education 
missions of U.S. government and industry (the “expert” model 
vs. the “metropolitan migrant” model)? 3) How does LAC 
relate to content-based language instruction and the 
development of new content-based FL textbooks and 
technology? 4) How can we better link LAC to K-12 foreign 
language and cross-cultural education as well as to post-
secondary international education, including study abroad?
