Some British research on teachers¹ perceptions of language skills on entry
to school (aged 4 1/2):

The article above it, however, shows an improvement in test scores over 5
years.

One problem is of course again distribution. If highly literate homes have
the same number, or slightly fewer, books than previously, but children¹s
books are overall more cheaper (like all leisure goods, they now represent a
much smaller proportion of take-home pay), then poorer families are going to
be able to afford them more readily.

To follow up on Margaret's comments.  My cousin who works in the publication
of literature for children and young teenagers in France tells me more books
are sold per head than ever...
