John Clark's statement "SLA's manner of organizing sessions, which relies heavily on face-to-face, who-you-know networks" is not accurate. As the former SLA Program Chair, I can assure everyone that in the majority of cases, SLA sessions selected for the program were organized by people I did not know, had never met, and were not part of any secret network. They were selected solely because they had academic merit. In addition, CAE is the only section, out of around 35, that does it in the way described. The reason is that they are a very very small section, and are able to logistically accomplish it. SLA is much too large to do it that way, given AAA time constraints.
