Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce that our next LANSI Advanced Studies
Virtual Workshop on longitudinal conversation analysis will be
facilitated by Simona Pekarek Doehler from University of Neuchâtel,
Switzerland!**This /limited-space, hands-on/ virtual workshop is
designed for participants with an existing background in conversation
analysis.

Should you register for the workshop, you will receive an email
confirming your successful registration or waitlist status. Given the
limited space, we ask that you only sign up if you are certain of your
participation and inform us ASAP if you are unable to attend after
receiving the confirmation email. Note that the workshop will be
recorded for internal use only.

Please see below for the abstract and speaker bios for the workshop as
well as a link to registration. We look forward to seeing you at the
workshop!

Abstract:

For the past five decades, EMCA has used sequential analysis to unveiled
in fine detail members’ methods for accomplishing and coordinating
actions in social interaction. Yet, already in 1985 Bilmes argued that
we sometimes have to turn to the larger conversational history beyond
the sequence in order to understand what action a given member actually
performs and why. Zimmerman (1999) called more than a decade later for
vertical (across time) comparative research, in addition to horizontal
investigations across settings, cultures, or languages. And Schegloff
(2009, p. 400) suggested that “The sort of data which has proven
indispensable for CA work limits the possibility of comparative analysis
[across time] at present, but not for long”. It is however only recently
(but see Wooton 1997, Clayman & Heritage 2002) that we see emerge an
increasing number of longitudinal CA research that sets out to deepen
our understanding of how participants’ methods change over time, how
participants come to act the way they do at given moments in time, and
how they move from acting as “not yet competent members” (Schegloff,
1989) to being “competent members” (Goodwin, 2018).

This workshop focuses on the methodological challenges of conducting
longitudinal CA. We address a range of key issues in the field: how to
design a longitudinal CA study, how to warrant comparability of
instances of a given practice over time, how to establish collections
based on longitudinal data, and how to interpret the observed change
over time in terms of increased member’s ‘competence’ or ‘development’.
We also discuss the limits of the possibility of scrutinizing change
over time from the participants’ perspective. The workshop is organized
as a hands-on training session, with ample room (in break-out rooms) for
group-work and a data session, as well as plenary discussions.
Participants will be assigned a small preparatory task in advance of the
workshop.

*Speaker's Bio: *

*Simona Pekarek Doehler *is professor of Applied Linguistics at the
University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. In her research she seeks to
understand how participants to talk-in-interaction use grammatical
constructions combined with bodily conduct as resources to accomplish
social actions and how, in turn, linguistic and communicative resources
(in particular second language interactional competence) emerge from the
process of interaction in situ and over time. Her current research
interests are reflected in the recent Special Issues that she
co-edited:The grammar-body interface in social interaction(Frontiers in
Psychology/Communication, 2021), Longitudinal studies in Conversation
Analysis (ROLSI, 2021), Early responses: Projection and the temporal
coordination of actions (Discourse Processes, 2021).
