Position Description

The School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology, to begin fall 2023, pending budgetary approval. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a closely related field. We seek a broadly trained linguistic and cultural anthropologist whose research and teaching bridge the subfields. Geographical and thematic areas of specialization are open. We seek applicants who can contribute to research on critical race and Indigenous studies, language and power, and language in sociopolitical context. Methodological areas of expertise are open, but candidates with training in visual anthropology/ethnographic film, digital ethnography, and multimodal methods are especially welcome to apply. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, research, and publication. Teaching responsibilities will include four courses per academic year in linguistic and cultural anthropology, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The online application should include a cover letter that discusses the candidate’s research expertise and teaching experience. The application must also include a diversity statement, CV, and the names and contact information for three references (letters are not required with initial application). The diversity statement should detail how the candidate can contribute to inclusive excellence at the University of Arizona, including personal background, experience working effectively with diverse student populations, and how the candidate includes diversity in their research program, community engagement, and teaching philosophy. The University of Arizona is proud to be a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an American Indian and Alaska Native-Serving Institution. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2022.

At the University of Arizona, we value our inclusive climate because we know that diversity in experiences and perspectives is vital to advancing innovation, critical thinking, solving complex problems, and creating an inclusive academic community. As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, we translate these values into action by seeking individuals who have experience and expertise working with diverse students, colleagues, and constituencies. Because we seek a workforce with a wide range of perspectives and experiences, we provide equal employment opportunities to applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or genetic information. As an Employer of National Service, we also welcome alumni of AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service programs and others who will help us advance our Inclusive Excellence initiative aimed at creating a university that values student, staff and faculty engagement in addressing issues of diversity and inclusiveness.

Best wishes,
Qing
