JOB OPENING: Research Associate for Profiling Bilinguality

POSITION: A research associate is sought to join a team which has
been awarded a Hong Kong Polytechnic University Research Grant
to Profile Bilinguality in Hong Kong. The members of the team are
Dr. Doreen WU and Dr. Daniel SO, Dept. of Chinese and Bilingual
Studies, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The position is
available from 1 June, 1996, and is open until filled, with an
annual salary of HK$ 217,885.
The Project aims at developing a descriptively adequate,
precisely differentiated profile of bilinguality of local
students in Hong Kong, and at exploring how such a profile would
enable us to achieve a better understanding of: 1) local
students' competence in Cantonese (L1), Written Chinese (L2) and
English (L3); 2) the formative process of individual bilingualism
in Hong Kong and the factors that lead to differential bilingual
proficiency--a phenomenon claimed to be universal among
bilinguals. The research associate will play an important role
in both the instrumentation and data collection processes.

REQUIREMENTS: Master degree or above in Linguistics and Applied
Linguistics. Proficiency in Written Chinese, Cantonese, English,
and preferrably in Putonghua as well. The area of specialization
is open, but preference may be given to candidates with strong
background in applied linguistics and ethnomethodology.

CONTACT: Please send a curriculum vitae and a cover letter which
describes the fields in which your graduate work has been/is
being undertaken and how you see yourself can be contributing to
the project. All application materials should be sent to the
following address by 10 May, 1996: Dr. Doreen WU, CBS, The Hong
Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Email:
ctdwu at hkpucc.polyu.edu.hk, Tel: (852) 2766-7441, Fax No.: (852)
2334-0185.
