Subject:  Maryland Mayfest Schedule


Every year, the University of Maryland Linguistics Department
organizes MAYFEST, a colloquium where speakers are invited to report
on a variety of issues related to one theme.

This year's Mayfest will focus on morphology. Regularities of word
form have been studied from a variety of perspectives. Syntacticians
have proposed that word form reflects phrasal structure and, in
feature-checking theories, that morphological features drive syntactic
movement. Phonologists have long been concerned with the apparent
mutual influence of the morphological and phonological
components. Investigations of how word structure is manipulated also
shed light on language acquisition and linguistic processing.

Mayfest 1999 will bring together linguists with a range of interests
in morphological issues to stimulate dialog across the various
sub-disciplines.

All talks will be held in the Maryland Room in Marie Mount Hall.
