In the 1990s there has been much debate about the best way to approach
the study of language and gender. The traditional divisions between
the deficit, the cultural difference and the dominance models have
been disputed. One consequence is that the profound theoretical
challenge to how we understand and account for gender - as a dynamic,
performative engagement which is never complete - matches with the
rich set of tools that have been developed for analysing the
complexities of everyday language use, agency and identity in
talk-in-interaction. Also, a new domain has opened up that is ripe for
study: the relationship of sexuality to social interaction and
language use. Recent edited book collections such as 'Language and
Masculinity', 'Language and Desire', 'Queerly Phrased', 'Language &
Gender', 'Rethinking Language and Gender Research', 'Feminism
and Discourse', and 'Gender Articulated' suggest a flourishing
research enterprise, but one which has yet to be fully explored.

Attendees of the symposium are invited to present parallel session
papers, to organise panel sessions or to conduct workshops on the
theory and/or practice of analysing verbal and non-verbal social
interaction in a diversity of settings in which participants
constitute themselves as gendered and sexed persons or
communities.

Presentations of research on the following settings are welcome:
everyday conversation, institutional talk, talk in the media,
computer-mediated communication, and dialogue in popular culture,
fiction and written texts. We desire to achieve a relaxed forum for
discussion and debate, so accepted presentations will be grouped into
thematic sections under the guidance of a section chair and/or
discussant. Presenters will be allotted 20 minutes plus 20 minutes for
discussion.

Abstracts of max. 300 words in English should be sent with your full
contact details by August 1st, 1999 to Paul McIlvenny (see the address
below). Electronic submissions are welcome. Notification of acceptance
will be by August 15th. The language of the symposium is
English. Please redistribute this call for papers to interested
parties.

30th Annual Conference on African Linguistics (ACAL)
July 2-5, 1999
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

PARASESSION:	Comparative African Linguistics & Linguistic Theory

We are pleased to confirm that the 30th ACAL will be held at
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign beginning on the evening of
July 2 and ending on July 5.  The conference will be held during the
Linguistic Society of AmericaUs 60th Linguistic Institute (scheduled
for June 21- July 31), and will therefore provide an opportunity for
participants to attend various functions of the institute (including
forum lectures), and interact with non-Africanist colleagues from all
over the world.

The 30th ACAL will have a parasession on the theme stated above:
"Comparative African linguistics and linguistic theory."  Under this
theme, the conference intends to examine in as many sub-fields as
possible the issue of the application of current linguistic theories
to the analysis of multilingual data, including dialects of given
languages.  Comparative studies, as opposed to ones that focus on a
single language or dialect, are especially invited under this
parasession theme.  The conference is being organized by Eyamba
G. Bokamba (Chair), Elabbas Benmamoun (Associate Chair).

In addition to the parasession theme, papers in all areas of
linguistics are invited.  There will be three categories of
submissions: (1) 20-minute presentations that are followed by a
ten-minute discussion each; (2) 30-minute forum papers; and (3)
10-15-minute panel discussion presentations.  Submissions in category
#1 should be sent directly to the conference organizers.  Papers for
categories #2 and #3 must be submitted, with appropriate abstracts
each, including the overall summary abstract of the forum/panel
papers, through the forum or panel organizers.

DEADLINE & POSSIBLE TOPICS

Please submit 5 copies of a half (1/2) page abstract for any of the
paper categories above by May 28, 1999 on any of the following topics,
using the form provided with this announcement:

Acquisition of African Languages (1st, 2nd, 3rd, & nth)
African-American Varieties of English (including rap music)
Arabic linguistics (any area)
Comparative African linguistics (any area): Parasession
Historical linguistics
Lexicography
Morphology

Pragmatics(including Discourse Analysis)

Sociolinguistics (any area)
7 Syntax

Presentations can be made in any language, including African linguae
francae and official languages.
