Description:

The Department of Languages, Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki invites
applications for the position of University Instructor / University Lecturer,
beginning on 1 August 2018 for a fixed term of five years. The field of the
position is Somali language and culture. The teaching-focused position is
located at the new Department of Languages.

The primary duty of the university instructor / lecturer is to provide
teaching in Somali language skills in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes
in languages, and also to provide teaching in Somali culture in other degree
programmes according to need. The duties include teaching in all areas of
language skills, especially oral skills, reading comprehension and written
skills. In addition, participation in administrative duties and the
development of teaching is expected. The duties of university instructors do
not include research. The appointee must have excellent oral and written
proficiency in Somali, as well as good English skills. Proficiency in Finnish
or interest in learning Finnish will be considered an asset.

Appointees to the position of university instructor shall hold an applicable
second-cycle degree and be able to provide diverse high-quality teaching.
Applicants who hold a PhD degree will qualify for employment at university
lecturer level; this includes the opportunity to negotiate a research
component as part of the task description.
When assessing the qualifications of the applicants, attention will be paid to
experience in teaching Somali as a foreign language at university level,
pedagogical training and education in applied Somali linguistics, the ability
to produce learning material suitable for an academic context, applicable
publications, other teaching merits, and, if necessary, a demonstration of
teaching skills. Experience in teaching advanced oral skills, reading
comprehension, writing academic and professional texts as well as translation
will be considered a further merit. In addition, the applicants are expected
to have experience of teaching in various learning environments and using
educational technology, as well as the willingness to actively participate in
the development of the degree programmes. Evidence of interest in applied
linguistics research will be appreciated. 

The salary for a university instructor is based on levels 4 – 5 of the
requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of
Finnish universities. For a university lecturer the levels are 5 – 7. In
addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal
performance. There will be a four-month trial period.
