Meeting Description:

Languages – Keys to Global Connections:

With the increase of intolerance and intercultural incomprehension, now more
than ever developing learners’ capabilities in additional languages and
intercultural sensitivity is important for the ongoing wellbeing of our global
society.
After a celebratory welcome evening which will include the Keith Horward
Memorial Lecture and the awarding of the Patji-Dawes award for outstanding
achievements in language teaching, the AFMLTA 21st International Languages
Conference, held on the beautiful Gold Coast, will offer you a two-day
exploration of current issues and new trends in languages education. Keynote
speakers include:

- Professor Nina Spada (University of Toronto), leading international expert
on the role of instruction in the teaching and learning of languages
- Worldwide authority on languages and linguistics and honorary professor of
linguistics at the University of Wales, David Crystal who has published more
than 100 books on aspects of languages (live virtual presentation)
- Associate Professor Liz Ellis (University of New England), renowned teacher
educator, applied linguist and bilingual speaker and translator of Spanish
with expertise in multilingualism and the role of plurilingualism in education

This year’s Keith Horwood Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Professor John
Hajek (The University of Melbourne) who is a long-time supporter of languages
and languages education in Australia.

Call for Proposals:

This year’s conference will offer a range of different presentation types:

- Research-based presentation
- Practice-based presentation
- Workshop presentation

While English has been the main language for presentations in the past, this
year we encourage presentations in languages including Chinese, French,
German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

All presentations will be of 30 minutes, with 10 minutes’ discussion time
available.

Guidelines for presentations:

Research-based presentation:

A research-based presentation gives you the opportunity to talk about
something you have explored in the area of languages education. It could be an
account of research undertaken either through formal education or as
practitioner-led research or classroom-based inquiry. Typically, the research
described would be situated in the wider context of the area under discussion,
and supported by appropriate reference to recent published research, and
include an outline of methodology, results and implications.

Practice-based presentation:

A practice-based presentation offers the chance to discuss, with a like-minded
audience, aspects of your teaching and learning practice. In general, the
discussion would need to involve some theorisation of your work, with
appropriate reference to published research, as well as an outline of the
reasons and the impact of the teaching and learning described.

Workshop presentations:

A workshop presentation provides you with a brief session to model an aspect
of languages education in a hands-on way encouraging participant
collaboration. While the focus is on the practical, these sessions should also
describe the relationship between the activity and the wider field of
languages teaching and learning with appropriate reference to published
research and current practice.

Topics:

We welcome presentations on all aspects of languages teaching and learning.

Given this year’s focus on global connections, we would be very happy to
receive proposals which incorporate a global or international focus.

Submission of proposals:

Please send a 100-150 word proposal, a biography (maximum 80 words) and
contact details to info at afmlta.asn.au by March 31, 2017.
