Project Background:
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time,
fixed term position as a Research Associate  – Computational Linguistics /
Text-Corpus Linguistics to be based at Ulster University, Northern Ireland.
The post is available for a period of 12 months (subject to end date no later
than 25 September 2019). The position is funded by the Arts and Humanities
Research Council as part of the project “Investigating Variation and change:
Case in Diachrony”. This project is led by Dr Christina Sevdali (PI) and Prof
Elena Anagnostopoulou (CoI). 

The project focuses on the study of the category of case as the morphological
expression of grammatical functions and its link to formal syntax.
Empirically, the project focuses on Greek, in the course of its diachronic
development in the last two thousand and eight hundred years, including the
different diachronic paths taken by the Northern Greek dialects and Standard
Modern Greek. In order to achieve its theoretical aim, the research team has
been collecting, and analyzing data from a variety of syntactic environments
where datives and genitives are found. The team currently involves the PI, CoI
and another Research Associate. The post-holder will be an integral part of
the team, primarily responsible for a range of tasks in the field of
linguistic computing as outlined below.

Job Purpose:
The central task associated with the Research Associate position will consist
of authoring the compilation of the digitized, searchable corpus (treebank) on
the basis of the Greek data that was amassed by the project in 2017-8 from a
variety of syntactic environments (e.g. datives and genitives as objects of
monotransitives and ditransitives, quirky subjects etc.). This treebank will
be in the spirit of the PROIEL treebank (https://proiel.github.io) with any
necessary amendments. 

Main Duties:
- Carry out (an automatic) morphological tagging of the corpus; 
- Work closely with the research team to decide the syntactic tags for the
corpus; 
- Amend/ tailor existing search engines in order for the corpus to be
searchable;
- Build and maintain the website for the project that will also host the
treebank;
- Keep the daily log of the corpus documentation; 
- Test the web application created on the project on the variety of
technological devices, platforms and solutions. E.g. (iPhones, iPads, PCs,
laptops, mobile devices) and platforms (Windows, iOS, Linux)
- Co-operate with and assist to the University’s ICT technical team in the
preservation and sustainability of the data; 
- Lead any publications that relate to the building of the corpus and
contribute to the dissemination of the project’s research findings; 
- Any other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the post, including
but not restricted to impact generation, dissemination of results, teaching,
administration etc. 

The successful candidate will join both the project research team and the
Linguistics Research Centre within the School of Communication and Media based
on the University Jordanstown campus (Belfast city area).
