Meeting Description:

The University of Roma Tre and the University of Foro Italico Language
Centres, in collaboration with the Italian Association of University Language
Centres (AICLU), are pleased to announce the XXIV AICLU seminar, on “Listening
skill development and comprehension in language teaching at University
Language Centres”, to be held on 13th-15th June 2019.

The seminar is aimed at language practitioners working in higher education,
involved in teaching and research in the field of listening skill development
and comprehension.

Call for Papers:

The seminar is aimed at language practitioners working in higher education,
involved in teaching and research in the field of listening skill development
and comprehension. The seminar will provide an opportunity to share best
practices and discuss technological innovations and challenges in the
learning, teaching and testing of this specific skill, which is given little
attention in teaching practice and in applied linguistic research.
Considering that listening is the least researched skill in language learning
as observed by scholars such as De Mauro (1994), Vandergrift (1997), Nunan
(2002), in the last few years many studies have been carried out on listening
(among others, Bettoni, 2004; Ellis, 1994; Field, 2008; Lopriore, 2011;
Lopriore & Mihaljević Djigunović, 2011; Nunan, 1997; Rost, 1990; Vandergrift,
1997; Field, 2011; Lynch, 2011, Cohen & Macaro, 2012; Coskun, 2010; Goh, 2008;
Mendehlson, 2006;Vandergrift 2002, 2003, 2006,2008; Vandergrift, Goh,
Mareschal, Tafaghodtari, 2006; Cortés 2016, Jamet 2009).
The main aim of this seminar is to identify effective and up-to-date
techniques for teaching listening skills. The seminar also aims to enhance
collaboration across institutions.

We look forward to receiving abstracts which address any of the following
themes:

- Practice activities for the development of listening comprehension
- task-based listening activities in L2
- ways of adapting aural input to make it more comprehensible
- The role of input in second language acquisition from a historical
perspective
- Authentic listening materials
- multimedia listening activities
- Technologies for developing listening skills
- Development of metacognitive strategies to improve listening skills
- Listening for academic purposes
- Listening and interaction /“Bidirectionality” (Two-way communication) of
listening process
- Assessing/testing listening

Other proposals relevant to the seminar theme may be considered.
Speakers will have 20 minutes to present their papers, followed by 10 minutes
of discussion. Languages of presentation: English, French, German, Italian and
Spanish.
Abstracts of max. 300 words (not including references) written in Italian or
English should be submitted to aiclu2019 at gmail.com by 30 April
