Seeking outstanding Research Assistant with skills in research technology and
digital data analysis methods relating to the use of technology in linguistic
or cultural research.

The School of Languages and Cultures is one of the largest Schools of language
instruction in Australia with over 52 academic staff.

The School teaches Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Korean, Japanese,
Russian and Spanish, as well as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, to
students in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies, the
university-wide concurrent Diploma in Languages, the Diploma of Arts, and dual
degree programs.

At postgraduate level the School offers a Master of Arts in in Applied
Linguistics and two NAATI-accredited Masters programs in Translation and
Interpreting (one in Japanese and one in Chinese). Staff research and
supervise PhD students in linguistics, second language studies, translation
and interpreting, studies in culture, and related fields.

About This Opportunity:
The purpose of this position is to provide support to the Postdoctoral
Research Fellow (Research Technology) in leading the development of
technologies to support the research programs of staff more broadly in the
School.  The role will further assist in setting up and creating digital
materials for the Language Data Analysis Laboratory (LADAL), offer workshops
for staff about Research Technology and Digital Data Analysis methods as well
as providing analytical services to assist with ongoing and new research
projects within the School.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one
of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from
Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with
outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a
perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant
campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate:
With an undergraduate degree, or an equivalent combination of relevant
experience and/or education/training in an appropriate area relating to the
use of technology in linguistic or cultural research, and superior
interpersonal skills, you will also have the following skillset:
- Ability to carry out research related work;
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues;
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in at least one of the following
frameworks/methods/topics:  computational linguistics; language technology;
digital humanities; corpus linguistics; text analysis; or quantitative
analysis/statistics; and
- Commitment to upholding the University’s values.
