Description:

The Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics
(https://language.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz
(UCSC) invites applications for a position in Spanish Applied Linguistics at
the Assistant Professor level. We seek candidates who specialize in language
contact and variation in the Spanish-speaking world, and in particular, in
language contact between Spanish and indigenous languages of the Americas.
Significant training in second language acquisition and experience in
coordination of language courses and/or teaching Spanish to heritage speakers
are also desirable.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong record of research and promise
of continued scholarly productivity. Candidates are expected to have
native/near-native proficiency in Spanish and should demonstrate a strong
commitment to teaching applied linguistics content courses in Spanish, as part
of the undergraduate major in Spanish Studies, as well as all levels of
Spanish language courses. The successful candidate will also teach existing
courses and develop new courses (in English) in the undergraduate major in
Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism and may be asked to train and
supervise graduate student instructors. The successful candidate will
demonstrate a clear commitment to understanding issues of equity, diversity,
and inclusion, as well as best practices for ensuring that all students in a
diverse community, including members of traditionally underrepresented groups,
are supported.

The successful candidate must be able to work with students, staff, and
faculty from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, and we are
especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and
excellence of the academic community and whose professional activities (e.g.,
teaching and pedagogical strategies, research, mentoring, or other
professional or public service) foster diversity, equity, and inclusion. These
can take a variety of forms such as, but not limited to, effective pedagogical
strategies used for the educational advancement of students in
underrepresented groups; demonstrated contributions to the advancement of
access and equal opportunity in education; and participation in activities
that support the recruitment, retention, and success of scholars and students.
