Job Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Web Address: https://www.ed.ac.uk/PPLS
Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Semantics; Experimental Methodology; Fieldwork

Description:

Applicants are invited for a 30-month 100% postdoctoral position in the
project “A cross-linguistic investigation of meaning-driven combinatorial
restrictions in clausal embedding”, jointly funded by the Arts and Humanities
Research Council (AHRC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The
position is available as of July 1st, 2021.

The project investigates the combinatorial and semantic properties of
clause-embedding predicates in 14 different languages, collecting novel data,
developing cross-linguistically valid hypotheses and quantitatively evaluating
these hypotheses based on psycholinguistic experiments. It will run
concurrently in Edinburgh (co-Principal Investigator: Dr. Wataru Uegaki + 1
Postdoctoral Researcher), in Konstanz (co-Principal Investigator Prof. Maribel
Romero + 1 Postdoctoral Researcher), and Amsterdam (Co-Investigator Dr. Floris
Roelofsen). See https://wuegaki.ppls.ed.ac.uk/mecore/ for details of the
project.

The tasks of the selected candidate include:
- Carrying out semantic fieldwork,
- Designing and conducting experimental studies and
- Theoretically modelling semantic phenomena.

The selected candidate is expected to be able to work independently and as a
part of a large international team.

The two postdoctoral positions in the project are being advertised
simultaneously. For the position at the University of Edinburgh, keep reading
this ad. For the position at the University of Konstanz, see
https://linguistlist.org/issues/32.579/. Applicants can apply to either
position if they only want to be considered for that position, or to both if
they want to be considered for both. (You can submit the same application
materials to both.)

The deadline for applications is March 15, 2021. Applicants should submit the
following to the application link provided below:
- A full CV,
- A 1-page cover letter explaining their motivation for applying for this
position,
