 Institution/Organization: University of Mannheim, Germany
Department:

Level: Open

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Psycholinguistics

Required Language(s): German (deu)
                      Italian (ita)

Description:

The University of Mannheim invites applications for a postdoctoral or doctoral
position within a new project that investigates cross-linguistic structural
priming in bilingual children, adolescents, and adults across different
language-contact settings. The position is funded for up to four years and is
to be filled as soon as possible.

This project is part of the new Research Unit “Structuring the Input in
Language Processing, Acquisition, and Change” (SILPAC), funded by the German
Research Foundation (DFG, FOR 5157). One of the major aims of SILPAC is to
investigate historical language change using psycholinguistic methods. The
advertised position focusses on priming effects in bilingual speakers of
Italian and German in the domain of motion event constructions, investigating
the role of speakers’ age and language environment across grammatical and
ungrammatical priming.

The Research Unit provides an exciting research infrastructure involving an
interdisciplinary network of researchers from five German universities,
funding opportunities for conference visits, and an interdisciplinary training
package including regular workshops offered by international experts. The
candidate will conduct their primary research within the individual project P2
(“Priming in contact-setting bilinguals and monolinguals as a driver of
language change”) but is also expected to collaborate with other project
teams, including in a “bridge” project linking historical linguistic and
psycholinguistic research questions. For more information on the Research
Unit, see: https://silpac.uni-mannheim.de

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing experimental tasks;
organizing and carrying out data collection from Italian-German speakers in
Italy and Germany; data processing and statistical analysis; participating in
and contributing to conference presentations and publications; and attending
retreats and lab exchanges.

Profile/Requirements:
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a PhD or MA in a
relevant field (psycholinguistics, bilingualism, language acquisition,
language contact), a strong background in psycholinguistics, solid statistical
skills, and excellent academic writing skills and fluency in English. Native
or near-native command of Italian and/or German (preferably both) is highly
desirable. Experience with priming methods and/or with collecting,
transcribing, and analysing linguistic data would be an advantage.

Applications:
Please e-mail your application to engemann at uni-mannheim.de, with subject line
“SILPAC position”. Applications should be sent as a single PDF file attachment
and should include the following:
 - a cover letter outlining your research background and suitability for the
role,
 - an academic CV with contact details of two academic referees,
 - list of publications and presentations, if applicable (including work under
review or accepted but not yet published),
 - a description of relevant research experience,
 - scans of degree certificates and transcripts of records.

The application deadline is January 21, 2022, but applications will be
considered until the position is filled. Interviews will be held via Zoom.

The University of Mannheim is an equal opportunities employer and seeks to
increase the proportion of women in research, and thus strongly encourages
qualified women to apply. Given equivalent qualifications and experience,
applicants with disabilities will be given preference. When applying by email,
please be aware that breach of confidentiality and unauthorised access by a
third party cannot be excluded for a communication without encryption.
