Translation in Foreign Language Education

A book edited by David Coulson (Ritsumeikan University, Japan) &
Christopher Denman (Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman)

A Call for Contributions

Dear colleagues,

We are inviting submissions to our edited volume on the place and role
of translation in second language learning and teaching. This book
will consider the historic, current, and projected future roles of
translation in foreign language learning as its framework, within
which a wide range of topics can be explored. The editors are now
seeking chapter contributions from authors with a diverse range of
experiences and perspectives from foreign language learning settings
around the world.

Coulson) at coulson at fc.ritsumei.ac.jp, and I will be glad to forward
the PDF call for chapters.


Book chapters may focus on the following topics:

• strategies and approaches for integrating translation into language
education
• the current/future impact of machine translation on foreign language
instruction
• the selection and use of translated materials in foreign language
classrooms
• the traditional and/or future roles of translation in foreign
language learning
• translation and its effect on learner communicative competence
• translation as a strategy for foreign language learning
• machine translation and foreign language learning
• detecting plagiarism in machine-translated texts
• the ethics of incorporating machine translation into foreign
language classrooms
• university policies on student/faculty use of machine translation
• machine translation and the future of foreign language learning and
teaching
• the role of the L1 in foreign language classrooms
• translation as a cognitive learning strategy
• translation and learner identity
• translation and intercultural communication
• translation as a communicative activity
• translation and bilingualism/multilingualism
• effects of translation on students of varying level of proficiency.
• effects of translation on implicit L2 learning
• learner interaction in translation activities
• perceptions of translation validity among teachers and students
• how translation can be presented as a motivating, communicative
classroom activity
• educational benefits from the practice of subtitling
• how interacting with meaningful input through translation can
accelerate learning
• translation as a consciousness-raising activity for linguistic
structures
• interpreting practice for developing L2 fluency
• deepening cultural understanding through translation of songs and
poems
• any other topic approved by the editors

Chapter guidelines.
• Original, previously unpublished work
• Chapter length from 7,000-9,000 words (including abstract and
references, but excluding appendices)
• APA 7th edition formatting and referencing style
• Chapters can be research-based, position papers, reports on
applications of new approaches, technologies and/or methods in foreign
language teaching and learning.

Submission procedures.
1. Contributors are invited to submit a 150-250 word abstract of their
proposed chapter on or before June 10, 2023. For research-based
papers, abstracts should adhere to the following structure: purpose,
methodology, results, implications/significance. For position papers
or classroom reports, the abstract should include context/issue,
suggested courses of action, and implications/significance. All
abstracts must feature a concise title and list of 5-7
keywords.
