Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition

Description:

The Graduate Program in Second Language Acquisition in the School of
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC) at the University of
Maryland, College Park invites applications for a full time (40-hours)
tenure-track Associate Professor or an advanced Assistant Professor of
Second Language Acquisition to begin August 23, 2024. The area of
research specialization within SLA is open. The successful candidate
will be expected to teach two courses per semester and to advise
graduate students in areas including but not limited to second
language testing and assessment, instructional technology, age
effects/maturation constraints, or individual differences in second
language learning.

The Second Language Acquisition Program seeks a candidate with an
innovative scholarly research agenda, a solid background in empirical
research, the ability and desire to work on collaborative projects in
an interdisciplinary environment, and a commitment to graduate
education. We are particularly interested in a candidate whose
research promotes the application of technology to second language
learning, teaching, and assessment. Qualified candidates must
demonstrate native or near-native proficiency in English, the
potential to attract outside funding, a strong publication record, and
hold an earned doctorate at the time of application.

We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and service have prepared
them to contribute to diversity and inclusion. Applicants are asked to
summarize their leadership efforts, and past or potential
contributions to diversity in their Statement of Contributions to
Diversity. Contributions might include leadership in teaching,
mentoring, research or service towards building an equitable and
diverse scholarly environment and/or increasing access or
participation of individuals from historically underrepresented
groups.

For full consideration, candidates should submit a cover letter, CV,
Research Statement (upload as Research), Teaching Statement (upload as
Teaching), and supplemental documents: a sample syllabus for a
graduate course (upload as Supplemental Document 1), Statement of
Contributions to Diversity (uploaded as DEI [Diversity, Equity, &
Inclusion] Statement), and up to three writing samples (upload as
Writing Sample 1)—published or unpublished research papers, and
provide the names and email addresses of three references. All
applications must be uploaded to the University of Maryland web-based
employment application system at http://ejobs.umd.edu. For best
consideration, applications should be uploaded by November 26, 2023.

The University of Maryland, College Park, actively subscribes to a
policy of equal employment opportunity, and will not discriminate
against any employee or applicant because of race, age, sex, color,
sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, ancestry
or national origin, marital status, genetic information, political
affiliation, and gender identity or expression. Minorities and women
are encouraged to apply.
